I am a huge college football fan.

It’s the NFL playoffs, and now, because the BCS National Championship game is taking forever all I can think about is football.

It’s so bad that I have cobbled together ten ways that IT is like football…

10.  Without proper attention agile and nimble can easily become slow and bloated.

9.  Big money doesn’t always mean great performance.

8.  A great system is built from the ground up.  It takes time to create greatness from an inherited system.

7.  You have to be good in all phases of the game.  Architecture, design and administration are as critical as offense, defense and special teams.

6.  Don’t think.  Actions have to be automatic (or automated!)

5. Defense wins championships – security is critical.

4. Speed kills.

3. Injuries can ruin a season – maximum up time means top performance.  True for both people and equipment

2.  Communication – make sure you are getting the signals right from other systems like HR.

1.  Creativity – take what works for others and put your unique stamp on it!

Let’s all hope January 10 gets here soon!  I need to get some work done!  Go Ducks!
